Day 1 Recap

The first day of the 2016 Powerhockey Cup was kicked off right at the Opening Ceremonies with player introductions by Philadelphia Flyers long time in house announcer Lou Nolan and the singing of the Canadian and American National Anthems by the Flyers own, #1 ranked anthemist in the NHL, Lauren Hart. The games followed shortly as the hosting team, the Philadelphia PowerPlay, took on the Toronto Lake Raiders. Philly fell behind 1-0 but quickly rebounded with 5 straight goals on their way to a commanding 10-7 win. The Saints and Capitals played a physical game that ended with 24 PIM between the two teams. Jacob Ritter’s hat trick sparked Minnesota to a 5-3 win.

Day 1 was highlighted with a back and forth game between the Michigan Mustangs and Toronto Rock. After the Mustangs scored 2 goals 11 seconds apart in the second period, the Rock came back to tie the game and take the lead with a late goal by Harris Farid with 48 seconds left in regulation. The second game for both the PowerPlay and the Capitals was a low scoring defensive affair that went the distance. The first OT game of the tournament was won on a powerplay breakaway goal for Ottawa’s Mathieu Gagnon.

In the last two games of the evening, both the Michigan Mustangs and Minnesota Saints won by wide margins with the Mustangs defeating the Lake Raiders 12-5 and the Saints pulling out a 6-1 win over the Rock.
